How do I test whether a dashboard number is correct?
Trace it back: compare the dashboard figure with the same query run directly on the data, then with the source system's own report for the same period and filters. Check a sample of individual records and confirm any differences are explained by documented rules.
Verification steps:
- Confirm filters, date range and currency match.
- Compare totals at several levels, such as month, product and customer.
- Pick a few specific transactions and follow them through each stage.
- Look for duplicated or dropped rows after joins.
- Ask a subject-matter expert if the magnitude seems plausible.
