How do I connect Xero to a BI tool or database?
You can connect Xero through its API using a pipeline or connector that authenticates with OAuth, pulls invoices, payments, contacts and journals, and loads them into a database or warehouse. Your BI tool then reads from that database. Some BI tools also offer direct connectors, though these can be limited.
Typical steps:
- Create an app or authorise a connector in Xero with read-only scopes.
- Extract entities such as invoices, bank transactions, accounts and tracking categories.
- Load them into a warehouse with timestamps.
- Model them into clean reporting tables.
Remember Xero's API has rate limits and the data model reflects accounting logic, so you need to handle credit notes, multi-currency and tracking categories carefully. Keeping a history of loaded data also helps you spot changes made to past periods.
