How do I get Sage data into a reporting database?
The route depends on which Sage product you use. Cloud versions typically offer an API or export options, while desktop products often need database access, ODBC connections or scheduled report exports. Whichever route, load the data into a central database and model it there rather than reporting straight from Sage.
Sage covers several different products with different technical options, so confirm yours first.
General approaches:
- API extraction for cloud editions.
- Scheduled CSV or Excel exports where no API is available.
- Direct read-only database or ODBC access for some on-premises versions, where the vendor allows it.
Always check licensing and support terms before connecting directly to a database. Use read-only credentials and run extracts outside peak hours. Keep raw extracts so you can re-run transformations if logic changes.
