Why is multi-factor authentication important for business data systems?

Multi-factor authentication requires a second proof of identity, such as an app code or security key, in addition to a password. It matters because stolen or guessed passwords are a common way in, and a second factor stops many of those attempts from succeeding.

Turn it on first for email, cloud accounts, accounting software, data warehouses and administrator accounts, since these give the broadest access.

App-based or hardware-key methods are generally stronger than text messages. It is not a complete defence, so combine it with least privilege, monitoring and prompt removal of leavers. Many cloud and accounting platforms offer it at no extra cost. Rules differ by country and sector, so check how this applies to you with a qualified adviser.
