What is audit logging and what should a small business log?

Audit logging records who accessed or changed what data, and when. It lets you investigate incidents, show accountability and spot unusual behaviour. At a minimum, log sign-ins, access to sensitive datasets, permission changes and exports of data. Check how this applies to you with a qualified adviser.

Many cloud platforms provide logs that only need switching on and retaining. Decide how long to keep them, who can read them, and who reviews them, because logs nobody checks give limited value.

Protect logs from tampering, and avoid recording personal data in them unnecessarily. Logging supports accountability under laws such as GDPR and POPIA, though it does not alone ensure compliance.
