What is dbt and does a small business need it?
dbt is an open-source tool that lets you write data transformations as SQL files, test them, document them and run them in order inside a warehouse. A small business does not strictly need it, but it becomes valuable once you have several data sources, shared metrics and more than one person touching the logic.
dbt brings software habits to analytics: version control, tests, documentation and dependency graphs. Instead of a pile of hidden spreadsheet formulas or ad hoc queries, each model is a readable SQL file.
It is probably overkill if you have one source and a handful of reports. It starts paying off when numbers must be consistent across dashboards, when you need automated checks, or when you want someone new to understand how a figure is calculated without asking the person who built it.
