Is Postgres good enough as a reporting database for a small business?
Yes, often. Postgres handles reporting for small and mid-sized datasets very well, and it is free, widely supported and works with every major BI tool. It becomes limiting when tables reach hundreds of millions of rows or many users run heavy queries at once against your operational system.
Good practice if you use it for reporting:
- Do not report directly from your live production database. Use a read replica or a separate reporting database.
- Add indexes for common filters and joins.
- Use views or materialised views for repeated calculations.
If your volumes grow, you can move to a cloud warehouse later because the SQL you wrote is largely portable. Starting simple on Postgres is a reasonable choice when budget is tight.
