What does a good data refresh failure alert look like?
A good alert says which pipeline failed, when, what the error was, which dashboards are affected, and who should act. It goes to a channel people actually watch, avoids noise from minor issues, and links to instructions for fixing common problems.
Include:
- Pipeline or table name and time of failure.
- Error message or log link.
- Impact: which reports show stale data.
- Owner and severity.
Avoid alert fatigue by separating critical failures from warnings, and by grouping repeated alerts. Also alert on silent failures, such as no new rows arriving, because a job that runs successfully but loads nothing is as harmful as one that crashes.
