How do I monitor data pipelines so I know when they break?
Set up automated alerts for failed jobs, late data and unexpected volumes, sent to a channel someone actually watches. Combine job status monitoring with data tests that check freshness, row counts and key totals, so silent failures are caught as well as obvious crashes.
Useful monitoring layers:
- Job-level: did each scheduled run succeed, and how long did it take?
- Freshness: when was each table last updated?
- Volume: did today's row count fall sharply versus normal?
- Business checks: do revenue totals still match the source?
Also show a last-updated timestamp on dashboards. Document who is responsible for responding and what the first diagnostic steps are. Most pipeline failures are caused by expired credentials, changed source fields or API limits.
