How should I schedule and orchestrate data jobs?
Use a scheduler that runs jobs in the right order, retries failures and alerts you. Simple needs can be met with cron-style schedules or the cloud provider's scheduler, while more complex dependencies suit orchestration tools such as Airflow or Dagster.
Core needs:
- Dependencies: transformations should run only after loads finish.
- Retries with limits for temporary failures.
- Logging and alerts.
- Idempotency, meaning rerunning a job does not duplicate data.
- Sensible timing, such as after the source system closes its day.
For a small number of daily jobs, a simple scheduler is enough. Add heavier orchestration only when dependencies become hard to manage by hand.
