Should I self-host my BI tool or use a cloud version?
Choose cloud-hosted if you want minimal maintenance and have no one to manage servers. Choose self-hosted if you need control over data location, want to avoid per-user fees, or have the skills to run it securely. Many small companies are better served by managed hosting.
Self-hosting gives control and flexibility, but you are responsible for uptime, patches, backups, SSL and access security.
Cloud versions reduce workload and typically include upgrades and support, but cost more over time and may restrict some configuration.
Questions to ask:
- Who will be on call when it goes down?
- Are there data residency or compliance requirements?
- How many users will access it?
Whichever you choose, ensure the data underneath is in an account you own so you can switch tools later.
