Who should own the data and dashboards built by a consultancy?
You should. The code, data models, dashboards, documentation and the cloud account holding your data should belong to your business, so you can change supplier, bring work in-house or continue without permission. Confirm this in the contract before work begins.
Ownership problems arise when a supplier hosts data in its own account, uses proprietary tooling, or keeps the logic hidden.
Check that the agreement covers:
- Ownership of all code and models
- Access credentials in your name
- Documentation sufficient for another team
- What happens at termination
This is a basic protection, not an unreasonable demand, and reputable suppliers will agree readily.
