Who owns the dashboards and models an analytics provider builds for me?
It depends on the contract. Without clear terms, ownership of code, models and dashboards can be disputed. Insist on written terms stating that you own the deliverables, including documentation, and that this applies from the start rather than only after final payment. This is general information, not legal advice.
Questions to settle:
- Do you own the code and data models, or only a licence?
- Is documentation included?
- Can another provider maintain the work?
- Does the provider reuse your work for others?
Also check whether dashboards depend on a tool with per-user licensing, because ownership of the work does not remove licence costs. Rules differ by country and sector, so check how this applies to you with a qualified adviser.
