What are the red flags when hiring a data consultancy?
Red flags include promising results before seeing your data, vague scopes and open-ended billing, refusing to hand over code or documentation, tying you to proprietary tools, hiding who does the work, blaming your data without evidence, and pushing machine learning when you lack reliable reporting.
Further warning signs:
- Guaranteed return on investment figures
- Heavy jargon and no plain explanation
- Storing your data in the supplier's own account
- No plan for handover or ongoing support
- Pressure to sign quickly
- No discussion of privacy or security
A good consultancy is comfortable being asked hard questions and puts the answers in writing.
