What are MTBF and MTTR and how are they used in maintenance reporting?

MTBF, mean time between failures, is operating time divided by the number of failures. MTTR, mean time to repair, is total repair time divided by the number of repairs. Together they show how often equipment fails and how quickly it is restored.

Example: 400 operating hours with four failures gives an MTBF of 100 hours. If those repairs took 12 hours in total, MTTR is three hours.

It matters because it separates reliability problems from response and repair problems.

Commonly misread:

Track both per machine, and combine with the cost of downtime to prioritise which assets deserve preventive maintenance first.
