How many KPIs should be on one dashboard?
Keep a dashboard to roughly five to ten measures, each tied to a decision and an owner. There is no fixed correct number, but a dashboard that needs scrolling or explaining usually has too many, and people stop reading it.
Guidelines:
- Show the most important figure first, with a comparison such as last period or target.
- Use drill-down pages for detail, rather than putting everything on one screen.
- Remove measures nobody has acted on in the last quarter.
- Define each measure in writing, including formula and data source.
Commonly misread: more charts do not mean more insight. Zansa builds sector dashboards, usually in Metabase or Power BI, around a small set of agreed measures, with detail available behind them.
