How do you measure the ROI of data analytics?
Compare the measurable benefits of analytics, such as time saved, revenue gained, costs avoided or losses prevented, against the total cost of building and running it. Set a baseline before starting, attribute benefits to specific decisions or processes, and be conservative about what you credit.
Returns often show up as:
- Hours of manual reporting removed
- Reduced stock-outs or overstock
- Better pricing or marketing spend allocation
- Earlier detection of problems
Some benefits, like confidence in decisions, are real but hard to quantify. It helps to define two or three target outcomes at the start, such as reporting time cut or margin improved, and review them after a set period. Avoid claims of precise ROI that cannot be traced.
