How do I measure whether a dashboard is actually working?
Measure usage, trust and impact. Check how often and by whom it is opened, whether people still keep side spreadsheets, whether numbers match across teams, and whether decisions or processes have changed because of it. A dashboard nobody consults is not working, however polished.
Practical indicators:
- View counts and active users over time
- Time saved on recurring reporting
- Fewer questions or disputes about the figures
- Specific decisions that cited the dashboard
- Feedback from users at regular reviews
Most BI tools provide usage statistics. Combine them with a short conversation every few months, then retire or rework what is unused.
