How do I use shift data to compare production performance fairly?
Compare shifts using rates that account for scheduled time and product mix, such as good units per scheduled hour, OEE, scrap rate and downtime minutes by reason. Raw output totals alone mislead because shifts may differ in length, staffing, product run and breakdowns.
It matters because shift differences often reveal training, handover, maintenance or material-availability problems that machine data does not show.
Commonly misread:
- Blaming a shift for losses caused by upstream material shortages or equipment condition.
- Comparing a shift running simple products to one running complex changeovers.
- Trusting hand-written shift sheets that are filled in at the end of the shift from memory.
Use consistent codes, record events as they happen where possible, and review several weeks of data before drawing conclusions about any shift.
