How do I standardise product names and categories across systems?
Build a product master table with a unique internal ID, and map each system's product codes and names to it. Define one category hierarchy owned by the business, and apply it through the mapping instead of relying on each system's own labels.
Steps:
- Export product lists from every system.
- Match on SKU, barcode or supplier code first.
- Resolve leftovers manually, and save the decisions in the mapping table.
- Define standard attributes: name, category, brand, unit of measure.
- Assign someone to maintain it when new products are added.
Without this, category totals differ between shop, till and ERP reports, and trends are distorted by relabelling.
