How can I get data out of an old till or point-of-sale system?
Check what the system offers: a built-in API, scheduled report exports to CSV or Excel, or a database you can read from. If it offers none, ask the vendor, since many can provide exports. Automate whatever route exists and load the files into a central database daily.
Options in order of preference:
- API or cloud export.
- Scheduled file exports dropped in a shared folder or storage bucket.
- Read-only database access, if permitted by the vendor.
- Manual export as a last resort, with a strict routine.
Transaction-level data (each sale line) is much more useful than daily summaries because it lets you analyse products, times and staff. Watch for quirks such as voids, returns and end-of-day cut-offs that differ from calendar days.
