When should a company hire a data scientist instead of using a consultancy?

Hire in-house when you have a steady pipeline of data science problems, enough data infrastructure, and the management capacity to guide and retain someone. Use an external team when needs are project-based, you need several skills briefly, or you want results before committing to a permanent role.

A single hire can struggle without data engineering, domain support and clear priorities. Salary, recruitment time and turnover risk matter for small companies.

A common path is to start with an external team to build foundations, then hire to run and extend them. Insist that everything is documented and owned by you, so a future hire can take over. Zansa, for example, builds in the client's own cloud account and the client owns the result, which supports either path.
