When does a small or mid-sized business actually need data analytics?
A business needs analytics when decisions depend on numbers that are slow to produce, disputed, or spread across several systems. Typical triggers are growth beyond what one person can track in spreadsheets, multiple sales channels, leadership asking questions nobody can answer quickly, or recurring surprises in margin or cash flow.
Company size matters less than complexity. A ten-person e-commerce shop with several marketplaces may need it sooner than a fifty-person firm with one simple service line.
Good signs the time has come:
- Monthly reporting takes days of manual work
- Departments quote different figures for the same measure
- You cannot see profit by product, customer or channel
- Decisions are made on instinct because the data is hard to reach
