What should a good handover at the end of a data project include?
A good handover includes all code and models in your repository, documentation of data sources and metric definitions, access credentials in your name, a walkthrough for your team, a list of known issues and a plan for who maintains and monitors it afterwards.
Also request:
- A diagram of how data flows
- Refresh schedules and failure alerts
- Instructions for common changes
- Costs of ongoing services
Test the handover by asking someone who did not build it to make a small change. If they cannot, the documentation needs work. Agree the handover requirements at the start of the engagement rather than the end, when leverage and goodwill are both lower.
