What is data residency and why does it matter for compliance?

Data residency refers to the country or region where data is physically stored. It matters because some laws, contracts or customers restrict where personal or regulated data may be kept or transferred. It is a different, though related, matter from who can access the data. This is general information, not legal advice.

Cloud providers usually let you choose a region when setting up an account. Choosing a region in a suitable jurisdiction can simplify compliance, but it does not on its own settle transfer rules if people elsewhere can access the data.

Check your contracts and the laws that apply to your data, and record where each system stores it. A qualified adviser can help with specific requirements.
