What is data analytics and what does it mean for a small business?
Data analytics is the process of collecting, cleaning and examining business data to answer questions and support decisions. For a small business it usually means turning sales, finance, stock, marketing and customer records into clear numbers that show what is happening, why, and what to do next.
Analytics ranges from simple reporting, such as monthly revenue by product, to deeper questions such as why margins fell in one region.
It does not require a big team or expensive software. The core ingredients are:
- Data that is reasonably accurate and consistently defined
- A clear question the business wants answered
- A way to present the answer so people actually use it
The value comes from better decisions, not from the charts themselves.
