What counts as personal data or personal information?
Personal data is any information relating to an identified or identifiable person, such as names, email addresses, phone numbers, ID numbers, online identifiers, location data and purchase histories linked to a person. POPIA uses the term personal information and also covers identifiable companies. This is general information, not legal advice.
Information can be identifying even without a name, if it can reasonably be linked to someone, for example by combining postcode, age and job title.
Some categories are more sensitive, such as health, biometric, religious and children's data, and carry stricter rules. When unsure whether a field is personal, treat it as personal until you have checked. Rules differ by country and sector, so check how this applies to you with a qualified adviser.
