Should we build analytics in-house, buy software, or outsource it?
It depends on scale, skills and budget. Buy off-the-shelf tools for standard needs, build in-house when analytics is core to your product or you have steady demand for a team, and outsource when you need expertise quickly or lack enough work for a full-time hire. Many companies blend all three.
Consider each route honestly:
- Buy: fast and cheap to start, but limited to what the vendor supports and may not fit your data
- Build: maximum control and fit, but recruiting, management and key-person risk
- Outsource: speed and breadth of skills, but you must manage handover and ownership
A common pattern is outsourcing the foundation build, then using an internal analyst or part-time support to run it day to day.
